About the project
Pinpointing industrial history
This project emerged from a summer internship at the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology and the Canadian Museum of Agriculture and Food. My research on the Ottawa River is focused on the movement and flows of the river, but also deals with specific points in time. This interactive map is a work-in-progress, but connects some sites on the "urban" Ottawa River with technologies and industry between 1880-1900.
A major thank you
The research for and creation of this digital exhibit was made possible by Anna Adamek, Bryan Dewalt, William Knight at Ingenium: Canada's Museums of Science and Technology. Their enthusiastic support enabled the exploration of these stories and the development of digital skills. Adele Torrance, Catherine Campbell, Marcia Mordfield and Sylvie Bertrand in the Library and Archives were also invaluable to the research process. Finally, Monica Ferguson at Carleton University Library provided excellent references to resources.
About the researcher and creator
Cristina Wood is a graduate student in Public History and Digital Humanities at Carleton University curious about environment, place, and creative engagements with the past. Her central project is a study of the changing Ottawa River, and a digital history experiment in data sonification.
